Thefletch Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 hiya folks I have been having a problem with my 1997 Ford Galaxy TDI. Ford have told me they think its the fuel pump but can't be sure so I have seen one for sale on Ebay. Can anybody tell me how difficult it is to fit a fuel pump on this car and does anybody know whether once it has been fitted, it has to be plugged into Ford diagnostics for calibration or to update the vehicle? many thanks Huw Quote
seatkid Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 There is no fuel pump as such on your 97 Tdi. The "pump" is built in the injector pump. This is the big expensive lump on the front of the engine with the pipes going to the injectors. You need to remove the cambelt and piping before removing this. This involves liffting the engine and removing an engine mount, covers etc. See the procedure for changing cambelt for more info Once refitted, the pump needs to be setup as will the cambelt etc., the dealer would probably use diagnostics to check the injection timing was correct In short, a complicated (and expensive!) job that requires skill and the correct information and tools. Not really a DIY job unless you are experienced. "Thinking" it may be the fuel pump is an expensive "lets change it and see" excercise. I recomend you try a diesel specialist (e.g. Lucas etc) before you jump in and spend (possibly) a thousand pounds or more. Quote
Thefletch Posted October 15, 2007 Author Report Posted October 15, 2007 thanks for that. It was the Diesel Injector Pump I was referring to. I can see one on Ebay for under Quote
seatkid Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Well.... B) ...what are the symptoms and whats been changed? Quote
fastphil Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Hi there I changed the diesel injector pump on my Dads TDIIt was not to difficult as long as you remember the order in which you take it off as to putting the new one backIt was a used one from a bigger engine so he had it calibrated just in caseTouch wood its running fine Quote
Thefletch Posted October 16, 2007 Author Report Posted October 16, 2007 thanks for that folks. I actually fixed the problem myself yesterday. It turned out to be a faulty fuel shotoff solenoid. Those trained monkeys as Ford were unable to spot the problem and wanted to change the pump. Glad its sorted now, just Quote
gregers Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 wonder if its worth a go at going back and SHOUTING BLOODY HELL at them and see if that will embarrass them in giving you a bit of a refund. Quote
Thefletch Posted October 17, 2007 Author Report Posted October 17, 2007 I did phone them back up and told them I was annoyed since when I booked in the car, I specifically asked them to check the solenoid and the exhaust since the car had done less than 50 miles since these 2 parts were replaced. They said since the computer did not flag them up as a fault, they assumed they were working. I even asked them on 3 occasions to check this. I guess just another reason to try and stay away from Ford dealers. Quote
